Steuben County’s lake country offers plenty of public access spots and sandy beaches where you can swim, picnic, boat, fish, and enjoy summer sunshine. With more than 101 natural lakes scattered across the region, there are lots of public places to soak up the outdoors.

🏖️ Public Beaches You Can Visit

Clear Lake

A scenic lake with clear water and relaxed shoreline. Ideal for swimming, sunbathing, fishing, and picnicking near the public access areas.

Crooked Lake

One of the larger lakes in the county, offering beach access, boating, fishing, and shoreline relaxation. It’s a popular spot for family outings and waterside hangouts.

Hamilton Lake

With a public beach area and adjacent park space, Hamilton Lake is great for

swimming, fishing, and social summer days on the water.

Pleasant Lake

Originally called Nipcondish (“gentle waters”), this lake has a public beach area perfect for fishing, swimming, and lakeside relaxation with easy access to nearby Angola shops and eateries.

Potawatomi Inn Beach (Lake James)

Located in Pokagon State Park, this sandy beach sits in front of the historic Potawatomi Inn and features watersports rentals (pontoon, paddleboat, etc.) plus shaded shore space for picnics.

Pokagon Main Beach (Lake James)

Also on Lake James, this wide sandy beach offers space for swimming, sunning, beach games, and family fun, with picnic tables and snack options nearby.

📍 Other Public Lake Access Spots

In addition to sandy beaches, Steuben County has many public access points (boat ramps and lake edges) where you can launch watercraft, fish, or just enjoy the waterfront. Some of the lakes with public access sites include:

  • Ball Lake

  • Beaver Dam Lake

  • Big Bower Lake

  • Fish Lake

  • Fox Lake

  • Lake Gage

  • More lakes across the county are accessible through public access sites.

🧠 Quick Tips for a Great Beach Day

No lifeguards: Most beaches don’t have lifeguards, so swim with caution and watch children closely.

Bring supplies: Water shoes, sunscreen, chairs, and coolers make beach days more comfortable.

Explore beyond beaches: Many lakes offer trails, fishing piers, and picnic areas just steps from the water.

Boat & paddle options: Some lakes have rentals nearby, especially around Lake James and Clear Lake.

🏞️ Bonus: Pokagon State Park

Pokagon State Park isn’t just a beach destination — it’s a full outdoor experience with hiking trails, shaded picnic spots, campgrounds, and scenic overlooks around Lake James and Snow Lake.
